Police seek to reassure parents following suspicious incident in Basingstoke
Published: Friday, December 21, 2012
Police have concluded their investigation into a report of a suspicious incident in the Popley area of Basingstoke this week.
It was reported that a 10-year-old boy was approached by an unknown man near to Marnel Junior School in Popley on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 19, and that the man tried to put his arms around the boy from behind.
Detectives have fully investigated the circumstances surrounding this incident and it is not being treated as an attempted abduction.
Officers have spoken with the victim and his family at length and are satisfied that there was no attempt by the man to take the boy away.
Detective Inspector Ben Chivers said: “Reports of this nature are clearly worrying for parents, but please be reassured that we take them extremely seriously and will investigate them fully.
“Speculation and rumour, particularly on social media sites, is not always accurate and sometimes causes more alarm.
“We are aware of concerns in the local community about these type of incidents. We will always share as much information with parents as we can as quickly as possible. However, we have to carry out various enquiries to establish the circumstances.”
If you notice anyone behaving suspiciously or have any concerns, please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team officer on 101.
